OSSTF Welcomes $10.5 Million Funding Announcement

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 22, 2007) - Today's $10.5 million announcement by Education Minister Kathleen Wynne for new funding for psychologists, social workers, child and youth workers, attendance counsellors and others is welcome news for those in education as well as students at risk. This new investment will be an annual allocation dedicated to the support staff needed to help our students at risk.

Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) said, "This announcement again demonstrates to us that this government is moving in the right direction towards the proper investments needed for our schools. We have been working vigorously to call attention to the importance of these critical workers both in our Students First Plan and in many other conversations with government. This Minister of Education deserves praise for her work in securing these investments.

"We have always maintained that the dedicated involvement and support provided by the full educational team is paramount to improving student success, putting students first and increasing the individual attention and safety that students need," Coran added.

"Without knowing the details of the one-time funding of $1.7 million dedicated to 18 police officers, OSSTF welcomes this investment. However, we believe that this funding can be more effective in schools when paired with an educational approach that includes members of the educational team working in tandem with the police. Success in this area will take time and dedication." Coran added.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education and universities.
