OSSTF: Wynne and McGuinty Announce Significant Education Funding Improvements

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 14, 2007) - Today at Roberta Bondar Elementary School in Brampton, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Education Minister Kathleen Wynne announced $309 million of new funding over two years for education. The additional funding will be released in subsequent installments of $182 million for the 2007-2008 school year and $127 million for the 2008-2009 year.

In reacting to the announcement, Ken Coran, President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) said, "This announcement demonstrates to us that the government is listening and is moving in the right direction. OSSTF has been calling for funding improvements in general but most particularly in the areas of special education and education support services. Minister of Education Kathleen Wynne and her colleagues deserve credit for providing the additional funding to ensure this support.

"The dedicated involvement and support provided by the full educational team is tantamount to improving student success, putting students first and increasing individual attention that students need," Coran added.

The government also announced a complete review of the education funding formula in 2010. "OSSTF has been repeatedly requesting for a complete review. When the funding formula was originally designed it was acknowledged that continual revisions would be needed to ensure its effectiveness. The announcement of the additional funding is welcomed and necessary but also indicates the need for immediate review. We recommend that the review be expedited and that a full and open process involve all education stakeholders," concluded Coran.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, attendance counsellors, and many others in education.
