OSU Department of Plastic Surgery Welcomes Two New Reconstructive Surgeons

Roman Skoracki, MD and Ian Valerio, MD Join the Esteemed Team of Physicians at the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery


COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Mar 12, 2015) - The Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery is pleased to welcome its two newest members: Dr. Roman J. Skoracki and Dr. Ian L. Valerio. As leading surgeons in their respective areas of expertise, Drs. Skoracki and Valerio are expected to be a gainful addition to the strong and experienced team of physicians already established at OSU by Department Chair and Professor of Plastic Surgery Michael J. Miller, MD.

Dr. Skoracki earned his medical degree from the University of Calgary and completed his Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg. He then underwent Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship training at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he later returned to practice cancer-related microsurgery and reconstructive microsurgery for 11 years.

At OSU, Dr. Skoracki serves as the Division Chief of Reconstructive Oncological Plastic Surgery, and his specialty interests include oncological reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, and lymphedema surgery. He is currently one of only two surgeons in the United States performing microvascular surgery for cancer patients who develop lymphedema following their treatment.

An Ohio native, Dr. Valerio obtained his medical degree from University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completed his Residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He then served as an accomplished surgeon in the United States military during which time he held a number of distinguished positions, including Department Head of General & Trauma Surgery, General Surgeon, and Plastic Surgeon for the busiest casualty receiving hospital in Afghanistan from 2012-2013.

At OSU, Dr. Valerio is an Associate Professor of Clinical Plastic Surgery. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he will be focusing on developing and performing peripheral nerve repair/restoration techniques, advanced regenerative medicine methods for burn wound and trauma care, and several other innovative reconstruction strategies. Dr. Valerio also maintains an active reserve appointment in the military and will be helping wounded warriors, veterans, and other military personnel.
