Oswalt Law Group Discusses Recent Drop in Labor Day DUI Statistics

Attorneys From the Oswalt Law Group in Phoenix Discussed the Reasons for the Drop in DUI Arrest Figures Over Labor Day 2015 in a Recent Interview

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - September 22, 2015) - In a recent interview, attorneys from the Oswalt Law Group in Phoenix discussed the drop in DUI arrest numbers for the long Labor Day weekend of 2015 when compared with the same time period in 2014. According to these attorneys, there are several possible reasons that DUI numbers are down even though more traffic stops were made this year than last.

"The drop in almost every category of DUI arrests is encouraging news for those who track drunk driving statistics," note these lawyers. "However, another disturbing trend has emerged from the data: the drivers who are arrested are being charged with more serious DUIs than ever before."

According to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, there were a total of 450 arrests for DUI in Arizona from Friday, September 4, the official start of the 2015 Labor Day weekend, through Monday, September 7. These arrests included 28 charges against minors. Compared to last year's statistics, these numbers are down across the board.

"There were fewer overall arrests in 2015 compared to 2014," note Oswalt Law Group attorneys. "Despite the fact that 1,200 more drivers were pulled over, there were actually 100 fewer people arrested. This is good news for the state. However, a disturbing trend has developed; the average measured blood alcohol content of those arrested was significantly higher this year than last year at 0.153 percent versus 0.145 percent in 2014. This could mean that police are truly targeting the most dangerous drunk drivers, or it could mean that those who are pulled are more likely to be administered a breathalyzer than in the past, driving the overall measured BAC levels up."

Whatever the reason for the increase, the attorneys at the Oswalt Law Group suggests that anyone who is pulled over for DUI understand his or her rights and exercise them to the fullest. "You can incur significant cost and trouble even if you are not found guilty of a DUI simply by being charged," they note. "Your driver's license may be in jeopardy within fifteen days of your traffic stop, even if you are never ultimately convicted of DUI. If you are charged, you could incur substantial fines, jail time and other consequences by pleading guilty."

Instead, the attorneys at Oswalt Law Group in Phoenix suggest that drivers who are stopped or arrested for DUI contact them immediately for help.
