Ottawa Catholic School Board Top of Class for Conserving Energy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 25, 2011) - Hydro Ottawa is proud to present the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) with this month's Companies for Conservation award for its commitment to energy efficiency. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has reduced its energy consumption by a remarkable 27 percent through investing in retrofits and promoting a culture of conservation among faculty and students.

"Through investing in conservation, the OCSB is not only saving money but also instilling these values in the next generation of leaders," said Roger Marsh, Chief Energy Management Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies.

The school board introduced an energy management plan in 2004 to improve the efficiency of its main office and 80 schools. OCSB undertook numerous efficiency projects including lighting retrofits, installing occupancy sensors, and establishing new heating and cooling practices. In the first five years of the plan, the OCSB reduced its energy costs by $9,816,676.

"I commend our students and staff for embracing these conservation initiatives," said Julian Hanlon, Director of Education at OCSB. "Students and faculty are taking small actions such as turning off lights when a classroom is not in use, and powering down computers at the end of the day to conserve electricity."

The school board will continue to upgrade lighting in their schools this coming year. They also plan on expanding their "Black Out" project, an automated emergency lights system which ensures all lights are turned off when the last person exits the school.

The OCSB has received more than $117,000 in funding through the Ontario Power Authority's Retrofit Program, which is administered locally by Hydro Ottawa. This province-wide initiative provides partial funding to commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural customers who complete energy efficiency retrofit projects at their facilities.

Hydro Ottawa's Companies for Conservation program recognizes local companies or organizations for their innovative conservation projects.
