OTTAWA CHILD CARE FORUM

Crowne Plaza Hotel Ottawa, Chaudiere Room, 101 Lyon Street, Ottawa, Ontario Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 7:00 p.m. -- 9:00 p.m. Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Media Editor, News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - March 9, 2005) - This is a critical time for Canada's children. The recent Federal budget outlined its commitment to spend $5 billion, over five years, for the creation of a national early learning and child care system. A very modest amount of money has been allocated for the first year.

Parents and child care communities across the country have been working harder than ever to ensure that our governments get the building blocks for a child care system right - right from the start.

The Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care, the Ontario Federation of Labour, and the Canadian Labour Congress are holding Forums, hosted by local labour councils, in 15 cities across Ontario from February 21 to March 10.

Now is the time to pressure governments at every level for the creation of a national early learning and child care system based on Quality, Universal, Accessible and Developmental principles.

There will be another meeting of Federal, Provincial and Territorial ministers in early March to attempt to get an agreement on the foundation of a national child care system. The Ontario government can play a critical leadership role in the establishment of a national child care system that will directly benefit Canadian families, their children and early childhood workers.

In attendance at the Ottawa Child Care Forum:

Shellie Bird, Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care
Wayne Samuelson, President, Ontario Federation of Labour

Come and hear what's at stake for child care in Ottawa, share your experiences and ideas and participate to ensure a high quality child care system for Ontario and Canada.
