Ottawa Community Housing Welcomes Announcement From the Province of Ontario

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 20, 2009) - Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH) welcomed today's Provincial announcement of its new investment for social housing repairs.

The Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, Jim Watson, made the unexpected announcement while at a special event recognizing the renovation work being done at Lebreton Flats, an OCH community.

The Province of Ontario is opening its wallet once again, supporting its commitment to improve the quality of life of the residents of social housing and assisting in the sustainability of Ontario's housing infrastructure.

"Investments in social housing made by the Province of Ontario have been critical to Ottawa Community Housing and its tenants" said Councillor Alex Cullen, OCH Board Treasurer. "Today's announcement will go a long way in helping OCH address some urgently required capital work. This Provincial investment together with the recent Federal social housing funding commitment will make a tremendous contribution to the well-being of our local economy and the lives of Ottawa residents."

Last fall, OCH delivered the findings of its Building Condition Assessment Study (BCA). The report identified $340 million of necessary work needed over the next 5 years, to bring its housing stock to a reasonable standard. Last week, the OCH Board of Directors approved the organization's capital plan which outlined specific plans for the next 5 years.

"We have always strongly supported the need for all levels of government to work collaboratively on social housing needs. We see this as a significant advancement and very welcome news", said Jo-Anne Poirier, Chief Executive Officer of OCH. The physical state of social housing has deteriorated to such a point that it requires more than what the governments are offering. "We are realistic, we know that we cannot rely solely on public funding and we are looking at a variety of funding options." said Ms. Poirier.

Ottawa Community Housing provides affordable rental housing to approximately five percent of Ottawa's population. The Corporation is the largest social housing provider in Ottawa, and the second largest in Ontario. It provides 14,783 units for seniors, parents, children, singles and persons with special needs in 162 communities.
