Ottawa Senators Announce 2008-09 Minor Hockey Initiatives

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 9, 2008) - The Ottawa Senators today announced their new minor hockey initiatives for the 2008-09 season.

The club's second annual Minor Hockey Week will be held from Jan.10 to Jan.18, 2009, and will kick off with the first of two open Senators practices, available exclusively to minor hockey teams at no cost.

A variety of specialty coaching clinics are scheduled, with details on topics to be released at a later date.

That same week, the Senators will offer the services of their skating instructor, Marc Power, who will educate coaches on how to teach proper skating techniques. The region's minor hockey associations can book a two-hour session with Power, which includes on- and off-ice instruction, by calling Matthew Wason at 613-599-0156. Note that while Power's services are free, facilities and ice time are provided by the association.

At each Senators game played during minor hockey week, six minor hockey players will join the Sens on the blueline and four minor hockey officials will take their place beside the on-ice officials on the red line during the national anthems. In addition to special intermission activities, the week will conclude with the popular Senators skills competition presented by Bell, in support of Roger's House and the Easter Seals of Ottawa in conjunction with the Sens Foundation and the NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund.

The Senators also announced that they will support the Kanata Girls Hockey Association through sponsorship of its women's senior team competing in the Canadian Women's Hockey League, its women's intermediate team (under 21 years of age) and its midget showcase team. Four members of the Ottawa Senators women's intermediate team will be part of under-18 national team that will compete in the 2009 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship Jan. 5-10 in Fussen, Germany.

The Senators and Scotiabank Place kick off their 2008-09 minor hockey programs with the sixth annual Tim Hortons Coaches Clinic for all classifications of coaches from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. Coaches may register free of charge at

Other minor hockey programs offered again this year are the Senators T.E.A.M. Hockey Country program, Scotiabank Girls Hockeyfest and the Skills First Challenge presented by Bell, to name just a few. Minor hockey coaches, parents and players are encouraged to visit for more details.
