Ottawa Walk for Muscular Dystrophy

4 days away! Coming Together to Make Muscles Move

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 28, 2014) - On Sunday, June 1st Ottawa will be coming together to make muscles move in an effort to fight against muscular dystrophy. The community will be supporting thousands of children, teens and adults who face the daily challenges of living with a neuromuscular disorder in Canada at the annual Ottawa Walk for Muscular Dystrophy.

As a returning participant, Mathieu Gagnon and his family get to see the impact this community event has firsthand. Serving as the 2014 Ottawa Walk Ambassador, he truly believes in the power of this event. "I feel the walk will benefit my family because it will support us and it will provide me with medical equipment I need to stay healthy. It also helps my parents keep my chair in shape for me to be able to play hockey," said Mathieu who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at the age of 6.

Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of over 150 progressive muscle disorders that weaken the muscles that control body movement. These disorders can have devastating effects, resulting in the loss of most abilities we take for granted. Over time, many people with neuromuscular disorders are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe. For some, the disorder is fatal.

The Walk for Muscular Dystrophy is "an opportunity for the community to come together to support people affected by neuromuscular disorders to remain healthy, strong and live life to the fullest" describes Stacey Lintern, Muscular Dystrophy Canada Ontario Executive Director. This fun, family-friendly, fully accessible event will include activities for kids and adults, food, refreshments and prize raffle.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada receives almost no government funding and relies on community events and the generosity of its donor. Participating in the Walk for Muscular Dystrophy will assist in providing a brighter future for people affected by neuromuscular disorders. Funds raised will make funding for equipment, emotional support, advocacy and education possible. It will also fund therapy treatments and leading research to one day find a cure.

The fun will be taking place on Sunday, June 1st at Ottawa City Hall. Participant registration begins at 9:30 am and the walk, wheel and roll will begin at 11:00 am.
