Outstanding Canadian Honoured for Service to Veterans

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 26, 2008) - On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Laurie Hawn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, presented Mr. Arnold Willett with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation during a ceremony at Mr. Willett's home.

"Mr. Willett served his country, he has served his community, he has served his comrades - and with his service he has honoured us all," said Minister Thompson. "It is a pleasure to honour him on behalf of all Canadians."

Arnold Willett is a Retired Canadian Forces Veteran, and was selected as a recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his service to the Veteran community, including his dedication to assisting Veterans and their dependents in obtaining the benefits they deserve.

"Arnold Willett is a remarkable role model who helps to inspire his fellow Canadians to fully appreciate the legacy of our Veterans," said Mr. Hawn. "Through his generosity, devotion and dedication, he has made an outstanding contribution to improving the lives of our Veterans and their families."

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation consists of a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a Veteran's blazer, a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.

It is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifices and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted by the public at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.
