Over 160 Municipal Candidates Pledge to Become "Public Health Care Champions"

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2011) - The BC Health Coalition has received commitments from 161 municipal candidates* who have each signed a pledge to protect public health care. As public health care champions, the candidates have agreed to:

  • Stand up for Medicare and speak out against the privatization of health care in their communities
  • Work to keep and improve local public health services
  • Advocate for open, accountable, and transparent public processes with respect to their communities' health services
  • Demand sufficient funding for local home support services
  • Demand fair distribution of not-for-profit, long term care beds throughout the province
  • Stand up for fair wages and benefits for health care workers in their communities
  • Improve the overall health of their communities by proposing and supporting changes that reduce poverty.

"We are pleased that so many candidates have identified public health care as an important municipal election issue," said Health Coalition co-chair Rachel Tutte. "Municipal governments play an important role in promoting health and wellbeing in their communities and municipal officials have a duty to speak out against cuts to health services and to demand adequate funding of our public health care system."

The restructuring of home and community care, the future of Medicare, the upcoming renegotiation of the Federal-Provincial Health Accord and the resulting effects on municipal social and economic infrastructure are some of the most important issues facing municipalities today.

"The BC Health Coalition will be working hard over the next three years to ensure that elected candidates honour their pledges to protect public health care," said Tutte, who is encouraging voters to visit the Health Coalition's website to view its list of Public Health Care Champions before heading to the polls.
