Over-worked profs turn to technology to manage swelling class sizes

New multimedia textbooks help them connect with students again Attention: Education Editor, News Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - May 25, 2005) - An online text and homework program is helping to increase interaction in over-sized post-secondary classes. eGrade Plus is making waves in the university and college book market by providing a multimedia textbook that includes interactive features such as videos, animations, and tutorials, built directly into the online text. The program is also drawing attention because of its lower price point.

In a recent survey by the Indiana University Center for Post-Secondary Research, Canadian universities ranked last in terms of student engagement. Student engagement is often a challenge for time-strapped profs, particularly in Canada, where the student-to-faculty ratio is 25:1, compared to 4:1 at schools such as Oxford, Cambridge, and MIT.

Maximizing the quality and value of the brief time profs and students have together is a key concern. By delivering homework online with instant feedback for students, and links to study aids throughout the homework, profs can reduce the amount of time that they spend reviewing these concepts in class. This creates more time for exploration and interaction with students, instead of spending valuable lecture time reviewing homework questions.

eGrade Plus is nominated for a Software & Information Industry Association Award for "Best Postsecondary Education Learning Management Solution".
