Pacific Gateway Act Welcomed by WESTAC

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2005) - The Western Transportation Advisory Council (WESTAC) applauds the Government of Canada's Pacific Gateway Act announced by Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today in Vancouver.

This initiative highlights the importance of the Pacific Gateway and Western Canada in a national strategy. A federal commitment to greater focus on Pacific trade and more regulatory and infrastructure investments to facilitate it are welcome.

"In many ways, this initiative fits well with what WESTAC is already doing to emphasize a trading partnership with our Asia-Pacific partners and recommending a greater focus on a workable Pacific Gateway that benefits not only Western Canada, but the rest of the country as well," said Dr. Lyle Oberg, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation for Alberta and Chair of WESTAC.

"I'm also very pleased to see the commitment of significant dollars to support the strategy, assuming there is more investment to come. The new legislation and this initial financial commitment are a very good start."

The close to $600 million in funding over five years will be used for transportation infrastructure, efficient border services, and labour force and trade development.

Since 1973, WESTAC has been a leader and influential advocate in ensuring each sector of trade, labour, government and industry get equal attention and the voices of parties from both Western and Northern Canada are heard.

"Our forum's longstanding reputation of cooperation has forged some of the most positive relationships in today's industry," said WESTAC President Ruth Sol. "Our background, historical perspective and support from industry leaders across the West gives WESTAC important tools to participate in this exciting new initiative."

WESTAC is a non-profit association of major transportation organizations, represented by senior business, labour and government decision makers. Its objective is to promote transportation as a critical sector supporting trade, jobs and our high standard of living. Visit www.westac.com for more information.
