Pangolin Unveils First Component Giving Laser Diodes Reliable Protection From Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Uses in Blu-ray, Medical, Telecom, Storage and Other Devices

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwire - September 24, 2009) - In a major breakthrough for the longevity of products employing laser diodes, Pangolin Laser Systems, the world's largest producer of laser display software and control hardware, has introduced what it calls the world's first electronic component to protect laser diodes against damage from direct and indirect electrostatic discharge (ESD). Called LASORB, the component is described as an "ESD absorber" that protects laser diodes, photodiodes and LEDs from single, multiple, and repeated ESD events of either positive or negative polarity.

"LASORB has applications across a wide array of consumer, commercial, and industrial products," said William Benner, president and CTO of Pangolin. "ESD is a well-known problem, especially Blu-ray and low-power single-mode red laser diodes," he said. "Without LASORB, a single modest ESD event can cause permanent damage, resulting in partial or complete diode failure."

Benner said LASORB also protects against reverse bias conditions and from power surges caused by turning equipment on and off. "LASORB is a game-changer with respect protecting laser diodes," stated Benner. "There is nothing in the world like it."

Pangolin is producing two series of LASORB, one optimized for red and infrared diodes and one optimized for Blu-ray diodes. Benner said LASORB is already being used by electronics manufacturers and university researchers in several countries.

A website for LASORB offers detailed product information and datasheets, background on laser diodes and ESD, and related information. Videos demonstrating the effects of ESD on laser diodes and the effectiveness of LASORB in protecting them are available at ( or YouTube: ( and
