Parks Associates: 23% of Chronic-Care Patients Struggle to Exercise Regularly

Research Firm Will Address Implications of New Research at Connected Health Summit: Engaging Consumers in the Session "Bring Doctors to Your Home: Virtually and In Person"

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Aug 26, 2016) - New digital health research by Parks Associates shows that 23% of chronic-care patients report it is very difficult for them to exercise regularly and 19% struggle to maintain a prescribed diet. Parks Associates notes that new smart healthcare devices and apps, as well as remote monitoring solutions by caregivers, could help these patients adhere to their healthcare plans.

"The growing availability of virtual care options such as telephonic consultation and video chat has given some care services an on-demand aspect similar to Netflix, Uber, or GrubHub," said Harry Wang, Senior Research Director, Parks Associates. "This approach, which is supported by the development of smart home solutions, will provide real value to patients with chronic conditions and help improve outcomes by following care plans and interacting more frequently with their doctors."

Parks Associates will host the third-annual Connected Health Summit: Engaging Consumers, August 30 - September 1 at the Omni Hotel in San Diego. The event, which features keynotes from HumanaVitality, Medtronic, Samsung, and Walmart, focuses on remote health monitoring for accountable care, consumer-centric wellness and fitness solutions, independent living technologies and services, and innovative virtual/convenience care models.

Wang will moderate the session "Bring Doctors to Your Home: Virtually and In Person" at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. The session will examine the virtual care industry, disruptive business models, and interest among care providers and health insurers in expanding on-demand experiences within their care services.

Speakers for the session include:

  • Ray Costantini, MD, Co-Founder & CEO, Bright.md
  • Henry DePhillips, MD, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer, TelaDoc
  • Sander Duncan, Vice President of Business Development, Pager
  • Dr. Sanjay Patil, Chief Medical Informatics Officer, MDLIVE, Inc.
  • Jon Pearce, CEO and Co-founder, Zipnosis

"We continue to see virtual care gravitate and evolve towards evidence-based medicine," said Jon Pearce, CEO and Co-founder, Zipnosis. "We've also seen virtual care increasingly integrate within health system physician networks and technologies to ensure continuity of care. We're excited to support this revolution in patient care delivery and enable healthcare systems to further optimize patient outcomes."

Parks Associates research reveals over 60% of consumers in U.S. broadband households have a chronic condition, including obesity, high cholesterol, and hypertension. Failure to adhere to treatment plans in exercise and diet increases the health risks and treatment costs for these conditions.

Brad Russell, Research Analyst, Parks Associates, will moderate the session "Integrating Smart Home Solutions into Connected Health Experience" at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31. This panel will address ways IoT technologies can deliver healthcare experiences both passively and proactively. The speakers in this session will also explore areas of synergy with the health and wellness industries and debate the potential of new smart home players as partners to healthcare providers and health insurers.

Speakers for the session include:

  • Don Boerema, Chief Corporate Development Officer, ADT
  • Christian Garcia, CEO, Ubilogix representing ZigBee Alliance
  • Darryl Jones, Senior Director of Strategic Marketing and Analytics, Zonoff, Inc.
  • Joe Liu, CEO, MivaTek
  • Lainie Muller, Director, Wellness, Alarm.com

"As smart home adoption increases and consumers become more familiar with the capabilities of connected devices, use cases expand into health and wellness offerings," Russell said. "Medical alerts and emergency response monitoring, daily activity monitoring, and remote video-based communication and caregiving are a few of the early health-related applications that have been integrated with smart home providers."

"The increased availability of connected health solutions in the home offers healthcare providers even more access to real time, reliable, medical grade data," said Don Boerema, Chief Corporate Development Officer, ADT. "This will ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients, while also contributing to reductions in their healthcare costs."

"We are accelerating the addition of unique health and wellness solutions to our smart home and consumer IoT platform," said Darryl Jones, Senior Director Strategic Marketing and Analytics, Zonoff Inc. "The powerful combination of smart home and connected health delivers tremendous value to both caretakers and end users."
