Parsons Russian CWDF Project Recognized as Cooperative Threat Reduction Flagship Project for DoD

PASADENA, CA--(Marketwire - October 14, 2010) - Parsons is the prime contractor supporting the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) with the design, construction, systemization, and startup of the Shchuch'ye chemical weapons destruction facility (CWDF) near the town of Shchuch'ye, Russia. This facility will safely destroy a Cold War-era stockpile of nerve agent munitions stored at the nearby Planovy military base. A recent legislative report emphasizes the importance of the Shchuch'ye CWDF as a flagship project for the Department of Defense (DoD) Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program.

DTRA implements the DoD's CTR program, which is designed to assist the countries of the former Soviet Union to destroy nuclear, chemical, and other weapons of mass destruction (WMD). This project supports the Russian Federation's Chemical Weapons Convention requirement to eliminate its 32,500-metric-ton stockpile of chemical nerve agent. Recently, the CTR program has expanded its mission from securing and dismantling WMD at the root source to protecting against WMD "on the move" by enhancing land and maritime border security in the former Soviet Union.

"The Shchuch'ye CWDF's recognition as a flagship project for the DoD's CTR program emphasizes its important role in eliminating Russia's nerve agent stockpile," said Todd Wager, Parsons Group President. "Parsons is pleased to be part of this project, which furthers the CTR program's mission to secure and dismantle weapons of mass destruction and their associated infrastructure."
