Passport™ 1200 Sample Prep System Simplifies Preparation of Biological Samples for Large Mass Spectrometry Studies

Electrophoretic System Depletes, Fractionates, Desalts, and Concentrates 96 Samples in One Hour

NORTH BETHESDA, MD--(Marketwire - March 17, 2008) - Protein Discovery, Inc., a maker and marketer of products that simplify mass spectrometry sample preparation, today announced a new product that prepares statistically significant numbers of biological samples, quickly and economically, for analysis by mass spectrometry. The Passport 1200 Sample Prep System enables high-throughput mass spectrometry for clinical research by replacing a host of conventional sample preparation methods and protocols with a simplified, automated electrophoretic process. Protein Discovery made the announcement at the fourth annual conference of the United States Human Proteome Organization (US HUPO), currently underway in North Bethesda, Maryland.

The Passport 1200 Sample Prep System prepares low molecular weight analytes for mass spectrometry analysis from complex biological mixtures such as serum, CSF, and tissue homogenates. The system prepares 96 samples in one hour, automatically.

"Conventional sample preparation methods for mass spectrometry, such as those based on protein precipitation, affinity columns, ion exchange columns, membranes and so on, do not provide the combination of specificity, reproducibility, throughput, and cost to support large-scale biomarker studies," said Chuck Witkowski, chief executive officer of Protein Discovery. "By taking a different approach, we were able to automate sample prep procedures in a 96-well, parallel format, while introducing a number of other advantages, such as the ability to have up to 96 different experiments going on simultaneously."

"One of the key performance features of the Passport 1200 System is sample preparation reproducibility," said Protein Discovery's director of mass spectrometry, Jeremy Norris PhD. "It doesn't matter anymore who in the lab is preparing your samples. If you select an automated Passport 1200 System program that enriches a certain population of analytes, that's what will happen every time."
