PathCon Targets Crypto in Recreational Waters

Advanced Collection and Diagnostics for Cryptosporidium Reduces Risk of Disease Transmission

NORCROSS, GA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2008) - PathCon Laboratories, the pathogen control experts, today announced the availability of Express ID: Cryptonite(1), the first environmental platform designed specifically to detect Cryptosporidium from recreational waters -- including swimming pools, hot tubs, and water parks. The announcement coincides with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fourth annual National Recreational Water Illness Prevention Week (May 19-25, 2008).

Cryptosporidium, (Crypto), is an intestinal parasite that infects an estimated 300,000 people in the U.S. each year and is recognized as one of the most common causes of waterborne disease (recreational water and drinking water) in the United States. The protozoan is highly efficient at causing outbreaks because it is excreted in high numbers (millions), is highly resistant to disinfectants, and is thought to be infective at a dose of only one oocyst. Pool and water chemicals at normal use concentrations do not effectively kill the organism. Pools can be contaminated and become the source of an outbreak if an infected person uses the pool, especially in the event of a fecal accident. Because a contaminated pool cannot be recognized visually -- specialized testing is required for an accurate determination.

"Knowing whether a pool is contaminated with Cryptosporidium is key to prevention, and we are providing our clients with the ability to know quickly," said PathCon president and CEO Brian Shelton. "We designed Express ID: Cryptonite to give clients the rapid results they need, allowing contamination to be recognized early, minimizing the potential for ongoing disease transmission."

PathCon's Express ID: Cryptonite is the first complete kit for environmental detection of C. hominis and parvum from recreational waters at a concentration of approximately 1 oocyst per liter.(2) Test results can be obtained within one business day. Additional tests are available for chlorine-resistant, recreational water-related pathogens, including: Norovirus, Giardia, and mycobacteria.
