Patient Safety: A Mandate for the First Executive Director of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC)

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 22, 2010) - Bonnie McLeod, President of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC), announced the appointment of Catherine Harley as their first Executive Director. A registered nurse who specialized in wound management and studied post graduate business, Catherine will be responsible for operationalizing the strategic direction and sustainability of this not-for -profit association. Through national advocacy, she will work towards improving healthcare outcomes and patient safety by proactively championing ORNAC's vision to advance perioperative care on behalf of perioperative registered nurses.

Prior to joining the ORNAC, Harley served as the Executive Director for the Canadian Association for Enterostomal Therapy Nurses, which she guided through a time of reorganization and transformation. She co-founded the Canadian Symposium on Wound Management with Dr RG Sibbald and also worked on several marketing consulting projects in healthcare industry globally.

Officially formed in 1983, ORNAC is an Associate member of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the national voice for 12,000 perioperative registered nurses. The organization has a volunteer board of directors representing every province. ORNAC works to promote excellence by supporting the highest standards of operating room nursing practice and collaborates with Accreditation Canada and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute with initiatives for "Safer Healthcare Now" and colleagues internationally.
