PatientPerspectives.org Addresses Hypertension and Its Role in Erectile Dysfunction

Hypertension May Lead to Erectile Dysfunction in Many Patients

COLD SPRING, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 16, 2015) - PatientPerspectives.org, a CloudVisit Telemedicine and American Medical Systems collaboration, offers a secure, private videoconferencing service for men who wish to speak with other men who have a penile implant. A permanent solution to erectile dysfunction (ED), a penile implant is a surgical implant allowing men the freedom to achieve and maintain erections to resume regular sexual intercourse.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common cause of ED. Approximately 49 percent of men ages 40 to 79 who suffer from hypertension experience erectile dysfunction.

With sexual arousal, muscles in the penis relax to allow for arteries to dilate and increase blood flow, resulting in an erection. Hypertension keeps arteries in the penis from dilating sufficiently, and muscles lose their ability to properly relax. This results in an inadequate erection, or a lack of erection altogether.

Medications for hypertension may also have an effect on erections. Men who take regular medication for hypertension may notice a decrease in erections, or an inability to get erections. This is the result of beta-blockers in the medications that decrease the nerve impulses leading to increased blood flow.

Side effects of hypertension medications may also cause depression or feelings of sedation, which may also decrease a man's chances of getting and maintaining an erection.

After starting hypertension medication, men may notice fewer erections or more frequent insufficient erections rather than suddenly experiencing no physical signs of sexual arousal. It is important to address the issues early on to establish a treatment plan in the initial stages of ED.

PatientPerspectives.org, aside from offering a direct resource for men already suffering from ED, also strives to raise awareness for ED prevention. Many men see hypertension as an inevitable part of aging. Instead, PatientPerspectives.org urges men to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent hypertension -- therefore, preventing ED. Preventive measures for hypertension include keeping a healthy weight; eating a nutritional, balanced diet; decreasing salt intake; regular exercise; limiting alcoholic beverages; and getting regular check-ups.
