Pattison Features Screen-Based Public Exhibitions for Carbon 14: Climate is Culture

Pattison Outdoor in partnership with the Cape Farewell Foundation, presents a resonant series of screen-based public exhibitions from October 14, 2013 - February 2, 2014, that highlight the issues surrounding climate change, and initiate public conversation about the possible choices towards a sustainable future.

Engaging millions of daily viewers, Pattison's specially curated local and nation-wide public exhibitions are part of The Carbon 14: Climate is Culture Exhibition + Festival (Oct 2013-Feb 2014), which features multifaceted programs, including a major exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum, in partnership with ROM Contemporary Culture, a performing arts festival with The Theatre Centre, and a rich series of public programs and events. Launching the screen-based public exhibitions on October 14 - December 8, 2013, are two interventions by Toronto-based john st. You Be the Judge a series of six poster designs placed throughout Toronto's subway system act as conversation starters. From October 21 - November 25, 2013, Opposing Views, an ultra-short video piece mapping conflicting perspectives onto the face of Dr. Suzuki, will be featured once per minute on Pattison's 60 foot wide media beacon board on Yonge Street, just north of Dundas Square.

You Be the Judge and Opposing Views set the stage for The Trial of David Suzuki, the theatrical event and mock-trial of one of Canada's most renowned scientist, Dr. David Suzuki, who stands accused of seditious libel. The Trial of David Suzuki will be held at the ROM on November 6, 2013. You Be the Judge and Opposing Views are curated by Sharon Switzer and Claire Sykes. A Rare Perspective highlights 40 of Colonel Chris Hadfield's beautiful, awe-inspiring photographs taken from space, along with his original tweeted messages. On March 16th, 2013, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield left Earth's atmosphere for a third time to make history as the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station (ISS). During his five months aboard the ISS, Commander Hadfield took hundreds of photographs and shared the images using social media capturing world attention. A Rare Perspective by Colonel Chris Hadfield will play every 10 minutes on Pattison Onestop subway platform screens across Toronto, November 4 - November 17, 2013. Curated by Sharon Switzer and Claire Sykes. This project is programmed in partnership with the Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival, who is honouring Col. Hadfield with a 2013 Eco-Hero Award.

Also running November 4 - 17, 2013 is Drowning World by Gideon Mendel, one of the world's leading contemporary photographers, on Pattison Onestop shopping centre screens across Canada. An art project with journalistic roots, Drowning World is a long-term, global exploration of flooding. Drowning World asks questions about the places where water meets land in a disruptive way, and challenges standard notions of portraiture with the subjects posing conventionally in an unsettling environment. Images from the United Kingdom, India, Haiti, Pakistan, Australia, Thailand, Nigeria, and Germany, bear witness to a shared experience that erases geographical and cultural divides. Drowning World is curated by Sharon Switzer.

Pattison is very proud to support #crazyweather, a newly created digital video by Sharon Switzer, which is strategically located at the entrance of ROM's Roloff Beny Gallery, introducing the visitor to the Carbon 14: Climate is Culture Exhibition. Switzer combines individual tweets collected over the past year about the weather experienced in different parts of the world. The individual tweets seem anecdotal, even unimportant, yet their cumulative effect is rather troubling and makes evident the extent to which climate change affects all of our lives. Sharon Switzer is a media artist, the founder of Art for Commuters and the Arts Programmer and Curator for Pattison Onestop.
