CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 28, 2011) - The Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Council of Canadians are holding a town hall meeting on Apr. 29 in Calgary to raise awareness of a new trade deal that threatens vital public services like water, transit, energy and health care. CUPE National President Paul Moist and Council of Canadians National Chairperson Maude Barlow will speak at the event hosted by the Alberta Federation of Labour.
Canada and the European Union are negotiating a new Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which they hope to sign by the end of this year. CUPE and the Council of Canadians oppose the deal because of the impact it will have on public services and the environment.
This event is the first of a series of events planned across Canada.
