Paul T. Hess Named Senior Vice President and Executive Officer of VHA New England, LLC

Experienced Health Care Leader to Drive Success in New VHA Inc. Regional Network

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - Jan 17, 2012) - VHA Inc., the national healthcare network, and the Boards of Directors of VHA's New England and Northeast regions, have appointed Paul T. Hess as senior vice president and executive officer of the newly formed VHA New England, LLC. Hess will succeed Gerry Roche, who retires in March from his post as executive officer of VHA's New England and Northeast regions. Roche will serve as president and CEO of the Northeast Purchasing Coalition, LLC, a VHA SupplyNetwork™, during the transition.

The newest of VHA Inc.'s regions, VHA New England, LLC was created by the recent merger of the VHA New England and Northeast regional networks. The merger brings together 36 VHA shareholder and partner members in a single organization, representing more than 80 acute care and critical access hospitals throughout the New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

"Paul's previous accomplishments make him ideally suited for this role," said Gary Ford, group senior vice president, Regional Offices, Operations, VHA Inc. "Paul has provided outstanding leadership to VHA's Upper Midwest Region, including developing and strengthening VHA's relationships with such large members such as Allina, Mayo Clinic, and Sanford Health. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Upper Midwest Consolidated Services Center, LLC, a 37-member supply network whose total supply spend exceeds $3.6 billion. "

Before joining VHA Inc. in 1997 as a vice president of market management at VHA Upper Midwest, Hess practiced law and led the health care consultancy at the Minneapolis law firm of Halleland Lewis Nilan Sipkins and Johnson. Earlier, Hess served as a senior vice president of policy at the Minnesota Hospital and Healthcare Partnership, the state of Minnesota's hospital organization. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president at the Metropolitan Healthcare Council in Minneapolis.

"I am very excited to assume this important role," said Hess. "It represents a significant evolution for VHA members in the New England states and will ultimately result in game-changing advances in health care nationwide. Under this united governance, our prestigious roster of hospitals is uniquely poised to take clinical quality and economic performance to a whole new level."

Ford added, "We collectively endorsed Paul Hess to be the first senior vice president of VHA New England, LLC, based on his demonstrated leadership skills, industry vision and experience with the Upper Midwest. The critical skills and talents he honed with the members of VHA Upper Midwest will help drive the success of VHA New England."
