PBS Enlists Digiflare to Launch Xbox 360 App

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 22, 2013) - Digiflare Inc., a leader in developing "TV Everywhere" experiences, is excited to announce that PBS enlisted Digiflare for the release of its PBS app for Xbox 360. The app is scheduled to launch today for Xbox Live Gold members in the U.S.

The PBS app will include hundreds of videos from PBS stations, including full-length episodes from new primetime programs as well as the PBS archives, with new national and local content updated daily. PBS programming includes full-length episodes from programs such as AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, AUSTIN CITY LIMITS, FRONTLINE, MASTERPIECE, NOVA and SECRETS OF THE DEAD, as well as web-original video from PBS Digital Studios, winner of five 2013 Webby Awards.

Xbox 360 users will access and personalize their PBS experiences by identifying their local PBS station, which will provide them access to locally produced content along with signature PBS programs.

"We're thrilled to have helped PBS bring its content to Xbox 360. It's a unique platform that allows users to engage with content in remarkable ways" says Digiflare CEO Mano Kulasingam. The PBS Video App will allow users to find national and local content from member stations across America and stream their favorite shows effortlessly with full closed-captioning support. The app also includes support for Xbox Kinect, allowing users to enjoy PBS content with a few simple gestures or voice commands.

"After interviewing a number of leading Xbox development firms, we chose Digiflare based on their deep experience developing for the Xbox platform and their user focused approach" says Jon Brendsel, Vice President of Products at PBS. Bringing PBS to Xbox 360 presented unique challenges given that PBS' video assets were aligned with Apple's HLS video format. Digiflare's engineering team delivered a solution that seamlessly blended Apple's HLS adaptive streaming technology with Microsoft's MMPPF player. The result is a seamless PBS viewing experience for the Xbox connected user.
