PBS NewsHour's Sreenivasan Emcees Online Journalism Awards Banquet

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) -  The Online News Association, the world's largest membership organization of digital journalists, today announced Hari Sreenivasan, of "PBS NewsHour," will emcee the Online Journalism Awards Banquet at its annual conference in Washington, D.C.

The Online Journalism Awards Banquet is held on the final evening of the 2010 ONA Conference (ONA10), Oct. 28-30, and honors excellence in digital journalism around the world.

Sreenivasan joined "PBS NewsHour" in December 2009 as an online and on-air correspondent. He reports and provides news updates throughout the day on the program's website. He also appears nightly on "PBS NewsHour" itself, anchoring a summary of the day's headlines from the broadcast's newsroom. Sreenivasan joins anchor Jim Lehrer and the on-camera team of senior correspondents already associated with the venerable news program, which is celebrating its 34th year. Sreenivasan worked previously as a correspondent with ABC News, CBS News and CNET.

The Online Journalism Awards are open for entries until Friday, July 16, at 8 p.m. ET. Administered by ONA and its academic partner, the University of Miami School of Communication, the 2010 OJAs feature changes to acknowledge the role of investigative journalism, development of emerging platforms and achievements at the collegiate level. Eight awards now come with a total of $33,000 in prize money, courtesy of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Gannett Foundation, which also is supporting innovative investigative work with two new $2,500 awards.

ONA10 is expected to attract more than 800 online journalists from around the world to the Marriott Renaissance for three days of training, panels and workshops on emerging trends in digital journalism, as well as a Career Summit and Job Fair. Last year's event in San Francisco sold out.

The Online News Association is the world's largest membership association of digital journalists. Its mission is to inspire innovation and excellence among journalists to better serve the public. Membership is open to individuals who produce news and information for digital distribution, those indirectly associated with the process, academics and students. ONA also hosts an annual conference, held Oct. 28-30 in Washington, D.C., and administers the Online Journalism Awards, the only all-digital journalism competition.
