PC and Wildrose Candidates Are No-Shows for Friends of Medicare

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 16, 2012) - On Thurs. April 19th from 7 - 9 pm the Friends of Medicare are hosting an All Candidates Forum at the Richmond/Knob Hill Community Association building. After repeated invitations, the Progressive Conservative Candidate, Christine Cusanelli, and the Wildrose Candidate, Corrie Adolf, are currently conspicuously missing from the line-up of speakers. The liberals, NDP, Alberta party and Evergreen will be there with bells on.

"We are disappointed and wonder if perhaps we could find stand-ins to defend the PC government's abysmal record on health care or the Wildrose schemes for health care competition from private facilities." says Norval Horner, the Liberal candidate in Calgary Currie. "The PCs have just announced 140 new Family Care Clinics - these would be new, potentially redundant, and the Pc's have done it again - there has been no prior consultation with our doctors and nurses. The Liberals indicated more than 10 weeks ago that they would work with physicians to create long term care facilities in Alberta. This is desperately needed to free up the acute care hospital beds that are currently occupied by seniors who should be in proper long term care facilities."

Alongside Norval, an Engineer with more than 30 years of experience in the energy sector, the Liberal party includes doctors from both Edmonton and Calgary.

Over the last nine years, many family doctors have worked diligently to develop improved access and team-based care for patients across the province through Primary Care Networks or PCNs. "These existing Primary Care Clinics would save taxpayers eight times the proposed funding for Family Care Centres," says Dr. Phillip van der Merwe, spokesperson for Calgary and area Primary Care Networks or PCNs - an organization made up of more than 2,500 family physicians in Alberta. "We have already improved access through clinics with extended hours, provided a new way to care for patients with Chronic Disease and have focused on prevention." Independent health care agencies have evaluated and applauded PCN's, whereas Family Care Centres have no proven track record and have not been evaluated.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Friends of Medicare Forum on Thursday, April 19th at Richmond/Knob Hill Community - 2433 26 Ave SW from 7 - 9 pm. 403-229-3253
