Pelmorex Media Inc., the Company Behind The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, Celebrates Its First 20 Years

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 30, 2009) - Pelmorex Media Inc., the company behind the success of The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, two of Canada's most popular media brands, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Pelmorex Media recognized the potential for growth in the weather market and began negotiations to acquire The Weather Network and MeteoMedia in 1991. The company quickly became a leader in both the science of forecasting and the communications sector. An early focus mainly on innovation and development led to launching national content networks, such as a UV Network, a highway conditions report, a national pollen service and a national lightning detection service.

"Thanks to the dedication of our employees and their commitment to our mission of meeting the weather information needs of Canadians, Pelmorex has successfully carved out an important space in the Canadian media industry," said Pelmorex Media founder, Chairman and CEO Pierre Morrissette. "Our strength is based on our strategic thinking, innovation and a corporate culture that embraces change and forward thinking. We never aimed at being the biggest but rather at being the best at what we do."

The company remains at the forefront in terms of software development and technological advancement, including its PFE (Pelmorex Forecast Engine) and the patented PMX, which allows The Weather Network and MeteoMedia to simultaneously deliver local weather forecasts to over 1,200 communities across Canada. No other Canadian specialty or conventional broadcast service has this capability.

Over the years, Pelmorex Media has developed technology and products that have allowed The Weather Network and MeteoMedia to grow from television networks to multi-platform weather information providers on TV, the web and now on computer desktops and mobile. The growth can also be attributed to the company's five guiding principles which are strongly adhered to in all business endeavours. The principles are focus, competitive advantage, teamwork, win-win relationships and controlling our own destiny. These have proven to be the keys to success for the company over the last 20 years.

Along with utilizing the platforms to communicate weather forecasts to Canadians, Pelmorex Media also distributes weather warnings and provincial safety alerts to Canadians. The alerts aid in keeping Canadians safe during active weather and local emergencies such as flooding.

"We always focused on setting ourselves apart from the competition," said Pierre Morrissette. "This is one of the reasons why we have over 50 employees dedicated to developing software to create new products and services which supports our leadership position. And from that leadership position, we have been able to continually offer products that truly satisfy the evolving needs of our consumers and clients. We have never taken our successes for granted."

Headquartered in Oakville, Ontario, Pelmorex Media has received numerous awards and honours in the last two decades, including being named one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies for the last three years in a row. Company founder, Chairman and CEO Pierre Morrissette was also inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame - Order of Merit in 2006.
