Pembroke Woman Pleads Guilty to One Count of Animal Cruelty After Horse Starves to Death

PEMBROKE, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 11, 2014) - On November 3, 2014, Jennifer Cote of Westmeath, Ontario, pled guilty under the Ontario SPCA Act to one count of failing to provide suitable and adequate medical attention to a horse.

In February 2014, an Ontario SPCA Officer attended Ms. Cote's property and observed a deceased horse decomposing. A search warrant was executed and a sample was taken from the deceased horse. It was determined that the horse was emaciated at the time of death and had not received proper veterinary attention or adequate nutrition, resulting in starvation and death.

Ms. Cote was sentenced and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. She is also is prohibited from living with, caring for, or owning any animals for three years except for the animals she currently has, provided she complies with the orders for their care.
