Penn State University Alumni Association Pulls Ad of Joe Paterno Statue

READING, PA--(Marketwired - November 26, 2014) - Penn State Alumni Association officials have given notice to the owners of Distinct Collectibles (DC) that their ad for a Joe Paterno statue, "Running onto the Field," was not approved to run in their web publications, AlumnInsider and The Penn State e-Football Letter.

Alumni officials told DC through an intermediary, "We are unable to accept the advertising from Distinct Collectibles at this time. With advertising relatively new in the digital assets of the Alumni Association (web and e-newsletters), we need to create a distinction between advertising and editorial so readers understand the alumni association does not endorse advertisers but simply accepts it as paid placement. We will contact you once we have this in place."

The ad in question portrays a photograph of the Paterno statue and the copy, "Bring the Statue Home." The ad bears the tagline "Order Yours Today." Contracts for the placement of the ad were signed in late-November. The ads would have run throughout the month of December had they been approved. The statue was to be positioned as a holiday gift idea.

The statue is reminiscent of the monument to Coach Paterno that had been dedicated to him 2001, and was sculpted by the same artist.

"We are very disappointed in the Alumni Association leadership's refusal to allow advertising of the replica Joe Paterno statue. The piece has generated strong interest from our alumni," said Mike Flanagan, co-owner of DC. "A decision to run the ad is not advocacy of one side over another, but refusing to do so is. Penn State alumni can, and should, decide for themselves how they feel, so we believe the association leadership should have allowed the advertisement."

Penn State University has one of the largest alumni associations in the world and the publications are very important to merchants, such as DC, who consider their readers their target audience.

Joe Paterno came to Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950. As Head Coach from 1966 through 2011 he won a record 409 games, 2 National Championships, 27 Eastern and Big Ten Championships, and led Penn State to 5 Undefeated seasons, 23 National Top Ten finishes and an NCAA Record 24 Bowl wins. He coached 48 Academic All-Americans, 79 First-Team All-Americans, over 250 NFL Draft Picks, 9 College Football Hall of Famers and 3 NFL Hall of Famers. He was a 2007 College Football Hall of Fame inductee and Sports Illustrated's 1986 Sportsman of the Year; the only college football coach ever honored. His teams consistently posted graduation rates that were among the nation's best.

Paterno was also an important fund-raiser for Penn State. He and his wife Sue personally committed millions of dollars to Penn State academics and helped to raise hundreds of millions more. Their philanthropy also included seven-figure gifts to hospitals and churches, as well as a commitment of their money and time to Pennsylvania Special Olympics and many other worthy causes.

About the Artist

The creator of the famous statue of Joe Paterno known by millions, Angelo Di Maria was born in Delia, Sicily in 1947. His interest in sculpture began when he was a six-year-old child, when he would become totally absorbed in creating small figures and animals. In 1958, the Di Maria family emigrated from Sicily to begin a new life in Reading, Pa. Today, with 48 years of experience of sculpting a variety of subjects -- from the human form to wildlife -- Di Maria has a unique ability to capture the essence of his subjects, especially facial expressions that elude other sculptors. He is the 2008 recipient of the "Pagoda Award" for excellence in Artistic Development and a member of the "International Sculpture Center."
