The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Marks the Anniversary of the Release of Their Nationally Recognized Insurance Guidebook, "Breast Cancer: Covered Or Not?"

Book Addresses Common Insurance, Employment Issues

EPHRATA, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 29, 2007 -- In the year since the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition first announced the availability of their insurance guidebook, "Breast Cancer: Covered or Not?" which was co-authored by PBCC President & Founder Pat Halpin-Murphy & former PA Department of Aging Secretary Dr. Linda Rhodes, thousands of women across the country have benefited from the content of the book. It is a valuable resource for those who have questions and concerns about health insurance and employment issues.

The book was featured in the September/October 2006 issue of MAMM magazine, a national publication on breast cancer topics. The demand for the information contained in the book extends beyond Pennsylvania's borders. "The information in the book can help women everywhere understand how best to approach their treatment and get answers on whether it will be covered by insurance," said co-author Halpin-Murphy.

The book addresses some of the most pressing questions that breast cancer survivors face when making decisions about their treatment and care -- ranging from general information such as where to turn for help with insurance claims and who pays for clinical trials, to specific step-by-step options for individuals with various levels of insurance coverage, to sample letters to your insurer and employer on topics such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, which is a federal law that guarantees up to 12 weeks of job protected leave for certain employees when they need to take time off due to serious illness, such as breast cancer, or when they need to care for a family member with a serious illness.

"Women and their families facing a breast cancer diagnosis must not be faced with the additional challenge of dealing with complex insurance and employment issues on their own," said Pat Halpin-Murphy. "Our insurance guidebook helps to alleviate unnecessary stress and uncertainty for women battling breast cancer so that they can focus more of their attention on beating the disease."

"This book was written to help women navigate the insurance maze by acting as their personal guide and compass," said Dr. Linda Rhodes.
