When used on APS-C bodies, this standard zoom lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 36-105mm, ideal for a wide variety of shooting situations. The lens construction consists of three ED elements, three aspherical lenses, and one anomalous dispersion glass mold aspherical lens, all of which help to reduce chromatic aberrations and improve image sharpness and contrast. The lens also has an HD Coating to help suppress ghosting and lens flare.

Five weather-resistant seals help lock out water and moisture, allowing the lens to hold up in adverse shooting situations. Smooth and quiet autofocus is achieved with thanks to an SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor), which includes a brake mechanism for accurate, fast autofocus. The Quick-Shift Focus System allows for fast switching between auto and manual focus, and a zoom lock lever prevents barrel creep. Additionally, out-of-focus areas in the images appear smooth thanks to the nine circular aperture blades.
