Perceptive Marketing Develops Seminars for Small Businesses

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - May 24, 2010) -  Perceptive Marketing is a unique marketing consulting company which develops seminars for small business owners who need to develop an effective marketing plan or to sharpen their existing plan.

Sandy Lawrence, chief executive officer of Perceptive Marketing and the founder of the Do It Yourself Marketing Boot Camp, said she came up with the idea for the course when she talked to many small business owners who valued and wanted marketing services, but did not have a budget for them.

Carrie Carter, president of Disc Inc., said she was pleased with the results of a course taken earlier this year. The five-week course gave fresh ideas and renewed her enthusiasm for marketing. Other participants came from a variety of industries and Carter said she felt the diversity made the course more interesting and valuable.

"Sandy took the time to learn a little bit about us and helped us apply a marketing plan for each of our businesses," Carter said.

Many small business owners generally have specific knowledge about their particular industry, but frequently lack any fundamental training in marketing. In addition, as the owners of small businesses, they are familiar with the need to fill multiple roles. For both reasons, Lawrence saw an opportunity for a training course oriented towards small business owners who are accustomed to doing things for themselves.

"My goal was to help those people learn the fundamentals... and to make educated choices about marketing," she said. Since she started offering the course in January, she has had numerous students who are in transition between jobs.

The boot camp itself covers all of the basics of marketing: setting goals, identifying a target audience, outlining strategies for reaching that audience, networking, branding, and following-up on leads. In short, the course offers all of the essentials for developing an effective marketing plan.

Lawrence, who has more than twenty years of marketing experience with high technology companies, points out that a lot of personal skills are essential for an effective marketer. Networking is an essential component of any marketing plan, she said, and it is one which too many business owners neglect.

"Networking is not about what others can do for you, it's about what you can do for them. And it's absolutely essential you learn how to listen first," she said.
