Personal Marketing Expert Robert J. Gerberg of SET Explains How to Make Unemployment an Advantage in Your Job Search

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - November 30, 2010) - If you feel like you're at the end of your rope and want to toss in the towel when it comes to seeking employment -- do more in your search, not less. And when you're out of a job, it's the perfect time to do just that, according to SET, a personal marketing firm specializing in helping professionals find work or change careers.

Robert J. Gerberg, Chairman of SET, said people need to adapt to the market, rather than waiting for it to change, and unemployment affords the time to do so.

"Now is the time for people to expand their horizons and skills. The days of having a certain skill set and expecting it to always work are over," Gerberg said. "You have to learn and do more to become a 'utility player.' That's what companies want."

Specifically, Gerberg said, people can do these things to better themselves for future employment:

1. Look outside your main field of expertise, and see what other jobs your skills may crossover. In addition, study any new trends in your field.

2. Take the time to learn new skills on your own. The Internet, libraries and civic institutions provide an array of resources one could use for free or relatively no cost. Plus, it will only boost your confidence and self-esteem.

3. Don't limit yourself to just a few recruiters or sources for job postings in the hope of hitting the right one early. The chance of one recruiter having a job right for you the moment you contact them is very small.

4. Think outside the box. If your industry is in trouble or declining, focus on selling your skills which are transferable to new industries. Waiting for something to change is going to hurt you and your pocketbook.

5. Look to companies gaining in popularity such as certain tech areas and green industries. They're adding people to fill positions when struggling companies are not. Don't worry if your experience isn't in their industry. These companies are newer and often can't find enough people with industry experience.
