Pet Market Analyst David Lummis to Spotlight Current and Coming Pet Industry Trends at Global Pet Expo 2011

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - March 7, 2011) - Societal morays have changed to such a degree that the large majority of pet owners now openly admit to considering their pets to be an intrinsic part of the family, but Packaged Facts Pet Market Analyst David Lummis believes the party is just getting started. The next "big boom," Lummis predicts, will be the appearance in product marketing of new research findings proving pets' positive impact on human health, both physical and emotional. This is one of several topics Lummis will cover during his 45-minute "Pet Market Outlook" seminar at this year's Global Pet Expo in Orlando, FL, on March 16. Other topics include the post-recession "new normal" of shopping and retailing behavior; seismic corporate shifts such as Procter & Gamble's acquisition of Natura and Del Monte's sale of its pet brands to investors including KKR; and subjects suggested by the audience during a subsequent Q&A session.

Mr. Lummis, a nationally known market analyst immersed in all things pet, has a good track record of anticipating the direction of the U.S. pet market. During 2005, he foresaw the mass-market explosion of pet foods making natural claims, and in 2006 he suggested that No. 2 U.S. pet food marketer Mars would acquire Nutro, which occurred in spring 2007. In 2008, in his monthly column in Pet Product News International, Lummis heralded the opportunity for a national chain of upscale neighborhood pet stores, and 2009 saw Petco open its first smaller footprint Unleashed stores. Also in 2008, in his Pet Medications in the U.S. market report, Lummis forecast the release into wider distribution of formerly vet-only spot-on flea/tick products such as Bayer's Advantage and K9 Advantix, a prediction that came true in 2010.

Global Pet Expo, presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA), is the largest pet industry trade show in the world, and this year's event will be the biggest in its seven-year history. "APPA is thrilled to have David sharing his latest pet industry predictions at GPE 2011, just as we are to be partnered with market research publisher Packaged Facts in a data-sharing relationship that is advantageous to our members," said Bob Vetere, President of APPA. GPE 2011 will take place March 16-18 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, and will also feature numerous other seminars as well as exciting special sections including Natural Pet, Boutique, International Pavilion, and What's New!.
