Pet Owners at Work Turn to Skype to Watch Over Their Pets at Home

A growing number of pet owners are using a free online communication tool to contact their pets whilst they are away from the house

LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 13, 2012) - Concerned pet owners in the United States have turned to using Skype, the online video streaming service, to watch over their cat or dog whilst they are at work and away from home*.

Mischievous puppies and kittens left to their own devices could potentially cause havoc in the home if they are not under the watchful eye of their owner. Now though, thanks to the notion of using online commination tools, pet owners are hoping to keep watch from a distance.

The notion has taken off in the United States as numerous dog owners have set up a Skype account in their pet's name. Settings within the programme allow the home computer to automatically pick up when dialled in.

One American couple* who would regularly 'Skype' their three month old puppy noticed how sad the dog became on its own and, as a result, decided to get a second dog to keep it company.

Despite the good intentions of pet owners hoping to care for their household creature from afar, this might not be beneficial for them.

Some experts warn that dogs use both their sight and smell to gauge what is happening around them**. If they could hear and recognise their owner but not smell them, the animal is at risk of becoming confused.

This might cause them to act out of character and panic whilst at home.

There are a number of ways that pet owners can care for their creatures whilst out at work. This could involve hiring a dog walker to visit your property and walk your dog for you whilst away from home, either at work or on holiday.

Dog owners may wish to take out pet insurance to provide cover should something happen whilst their dog is at home.
