Peter Ritchie QC, Consumers’ Association of Canada & Trial Lawyers Association of BC to Hold Joint News Conference on Thursday

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor VANCOUVER / BRITISH COLUMBIA / MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Feb. 24, 2009) - A joint news conference will be held this Thursday, February 26 due to the impact high court fees have on ordinary citizens at present and the pending rule changes that will make cases cost even more and take even longer.

Statements will be provided by:

Peter Ritchie QC, counsel for two victims in the Queen of the North case
Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers' Association of Canada
Robert Holmes, president of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC

WHEN: Thursday, February 26 at 10:00 am
WHERE: Trial Lawyers Association of BC (office)
LOCATION: # 1111 - 1100 Melville Street, Vancouver (near Thurlow)

The news conference has been organized for two reasons:

* British Columbia is already the most expensive jurisdiction in Canada for ordinary citizens seeking civil justice and access to the courts after being wronged by reckless acts or other forms of negligence.

* The controversial civil court rule changes planned by the BC government will make civil justice cost even more and take even longer.

NOTE: The planned changes have already been rejected by the Consumers' Association of Canada, Trial Lawyers Association of BC and the members of the Law Society of BC who voted overwhelmingly against the changes, by a 6-to-1 ratio, during the Law Society's annual general meeting in September.
