TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary second quarter new home starts data for the Peterborough Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) today. In the second quarter, new home construction dropped to 117 starts from the 167 starts registered in the same period of 2010.

"Starts fell in the second quarter compared to the same period of last year, reflecting a slowdown in singles and semi-detached construction. The decrease in single-detached construction occurred throughout Peterborough CMA, however, while townhouse starts were down in Peterborough City, they were up in Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield," said Abdellah Massaoudi, CMHC Market Analyst for the Peterborough CMA. "While mortgage rates are still low, uncertainty about the employment market in Peterborough CMA continues to restrain demand for new homes," added Massaoudi.
