Petrobras Boosts Application Performance on Offshore Oil-Drilling Platforms With Riverbed

Steelhead Appliances Accelerate Database Backups by 8.5x; Dramatically Improves User Productivity

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - June 9, 2009) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT infrastructure performance company for networks, applications and storage, today announced that Petrobras, a Brazilian energy company currently present in 27 countries, has improved communication between 40 offshore oil-drilling platforms and the continent using Riverbed® wide area network (WAN) optimization technology. As a result, Petrobras is now able to back up its data daily without impacting end-user performance. In addition, workers on the oil platforms now get the same application performance as those at headquarters, which has dramatically improved both worker productivity and job satisfaction.

Petrobras deployed Riverbed WAN optimization to accelerate the replication of data from 40 off-shore oil-drilling platforms located in the Campos Basin, an area of around 60,000 square miles that extends from the state of Espirito Santo to Cabo Frio city, back to its corporate headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, and to improve application performance for workers located on the oil platforms. At the time backup of data from remote sites took more than 24 hours. In addition, there were constant requests to pause the process because it was consuming bandwidth required for day-to-day operations. "Each time the process was paused, the backup process had to be restarted," recalls Carlos Alberto Lage, Petrobras' land coordinator of Information Technology and Communication (ITC) for the Campos Basin.

Working closely with Decatron, an integrator versed in the implementation and support of Riverbed solutions and related consulting services, Petrobras deployed 43 Steelhead® appliances: 40 on the offshore platforms and three on the continent. The Petrobras IT organization also uses the Riverbed Central Management Console (CMC) for the configuration, upgrade and monitoring of these appliances. According to Lage, Petrobras deployed Riverbed WAN optimization rather than investing in expensive infrastructure, such as optical fiber undersea connecting offshore data to continent systems.

"Doubling the capacity of our links would not give us double the speed in terms of data transfers and access to applications. Our performance problems were mainly caused by network and application latency, which means that bandwidth alone would not solve the issues. With WAN optimization, we knew the speed gain would be at least 40%, at a lower cost and with simpler modifications in the ITC infrastructure," said Lage.

After installing the Riverbed appliances, the backup window for the offshore oil-drilling platforms, which had reached 34 hours, was reduced to an average of four hours. This reduction released significant bandwidth for end-users to conduct day-to-day operations, such as accessing remote data and applications and audio-conferencing.

Lage tested several WAN optimization offerings and chose Riverbed over its competitors because the Riverbed solution provided acceleration capabilities designed for not only improving end-user performance, but also accelerating the replication and backup of large amounts of data.

On average, after installing the Riverbed solution, WAN traffic was reduced by 65%, freeing bandwidth for routine daily activities. The combination of the reduction in WAN traffic, QoS and Riverbed's ability to overcome network and application latency has given remote users LAN-like application performance.
