Petrofac Enhances Global Communications With Nortel Solution

Resilient Network Improves Productivity

SHARJAH, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES--(Marketwire - Oct. 21, 2008) - Petrofac Limited,(2) an international oil and gas facilities service provider, is using a Nortel(1) (TSX:NT)(NYSE:NT) data solution to enable staff at its Sharjah headquarters to communicate more efficiently with its factories, construction sites and offices around the world. The solution for Petrofac supports IP telephony and advanced multimedia conferencing to facilitate improved communications within the company.

With more than 10,000 employees, Petrofac operates out of four strategically located international centres, in Aberdeen, Scotland; Sharjah, UAE; Woking, UK; and Mumbai, India as well as 20 offices worldwide. The Petrofac business is mainly concentrated on the UK Continental Shelf, Africa, the Middle East, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Asia Pacific region. With an extensive global footprint the availability of a reliable, secure and flexible communications network is seen as a significant element to its business success.

"Every second of every day, Petrofac people are at work in offices, offshore and at sites all over the world," said Mohan Narasimhan, chief information officer, Petrofac. "This always on global reach enables us to deliver highly responsive and cost-efficient services for our customers. That's why fast, highly reliable and secure access to information is critical for our business. By creating a stronger business information infrastructure we are not only improving our network but supporting our worldwide business strategy."

Wireless network access for Petrofac senior executives was an important part of the Nortel solution. The company needed to extend its existing network coverage and give executives faster and easier access to information along with communications mobility providing flexibly to work anywhere in and outside of the Sharjah headquarters.

Designed and implemented by Nortel and its channel partner, Alpha Data, the Petrofac Sharjah network and data center benefits from a resilient architecture that enables sub-second network recovery should a network failure be detected. This is an important party of the solution, guaranteeing business continuity and communications critical to Petrofac's business.

"When we designed the Petrofac network, we ensured we were delivering the network infrastructure they need today, with the flexibility and cutting-edge technology to satisfy their future needs and requirements," said Ramin Attari, vice president and managing director Nortel Middle East. "Nortel understands the challenges faced by enterprises in the hyperconnected world and is committed to delivering solutions for their transformation. "

The Petrofac deployment is based on Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 (ERS 8600) at the core. ERS 8600 provides full quality of service (QoS) capabilities as well as non-stop operation through Nortel's innovative Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) technology which provides always-on availability and ensures connections are not lost. Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520 is used for the server stacks and edge devices providing high-density Gigabit desktop connectivity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability.

Nortel WLAN 2300 portfolio for wireless connectivity enable employees to work from any desk or on the move within the building.

Due to the size and complexity of the network, ongoing Network Management represents a very important issue for Petrofac IT team. Identifying any network performance issue before they affect network services allows immediately action. Adding new users according business needs, managing LAN network bandwidth, prioritize traffic streams, and setting network access policies amongst other functionalities are now very easy for Petrofac to manage. To satisfy these requirements Nortel has delivered its Nortel Enterprise Network Management Portfolio including Nortel Enterprise Switch Manager and Nortel Enterprise Network Management System.

Nortel products and services make it possible for enterprises and service providers to be more energy efficient while reducing carbon footprint. Two recent reports from InfoTech and Tolly Group(3) show Nortel's ERS solutions to be significantly faster, more resilient and more cost effective than their main competitors.
