"Pets On Your Plate" Brings Public Health Issue to the Table

Animal Rights Attorney Shannon Keith to Direct Controversial Documentary

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - May 14, 2008) - Animal rights lawyer and filmmaker Shannon Keith is set to direct "Pets On Your Plate," a documentary that exposes the little known practice of rendering dead animals, many of them pets from county pounds, animal shelters, veterinary clinics and humane societies, into a variety of products fed to poultry, cattle and fish -- ending up in the human food chain and on your dinner plate.

The film documents how a dedicated and determined Leo Grillo (founder of D.E.L.T.A. Rescue, the largest no-kill, care-for-life animal sanctuary in the country) relentlessly unraveled a corporate and bureaucratic web of deceit surrounding the taxpayer supported rendering atrocity, while enduring the pressure of governmental retaliation.

The film features interviews with experts and Hollywood celebrities who share Grillo's passion for animals.

"If people really knew what happens to their own beloved pets when they die, not to mention the thousands of lost and abandoned pets that end up in county shelters," said Keith, "they would be absolutely sick.

"Imagine your pet's remains ending up in the feed fed to the cattle and poultry you eat -- would you still want to eat that food? The government assures us that our food is safe and healthy. It's not!"

Keith started the non-profit, tax-exempt organization ARME (Animal Rescue, Media & Education) in 2004. She later created her own production company, Uncaged Films, inspired by learning the FBI had labeled her an "animal rights extremist." Uncaged Films and ARME produced the award-winning documentary "'Behind the Mask,' which focuses on people in the U.S. and U.K. who risk their lives and liberty to rescue suffering animals.

"One of my missions has always been to educate the public about the extreme suffering and senseless exploitation of animals in our society," said Keith. "'Pets On Your Plate' confronts the issue of the horrible fate that befalls lost and abandoned animals and the human consequences in terms of public health and misuse of taxpayer dollars to support the rendering industry."

D.E.L.T.A. Rescue is a non-profit corporation dedicated to rescuing and caring for thousands of dogs and cats abandoned in the wilderness in Southern California at its 94-acre site in Acton, California. A subsidiary, Horse Rescue of America, cares for equines.
