PetSmart Charities to Celebrate Upcoming 3-Millionth Pet Adoption

Nation?s Largest Adoption Partnership Significantly Reduces Pet Euthanasia Over Its 13-Year History

PHOENIX, AZ--(CCNMatthews - May 21, 2007) - Sometime in mid-June, one very special pet will find a lifelong, loving home and become the three-millionth pet adopted through PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers. But this milestone will not be achieved alone. With the commitment and collaboration of its more than 3,000 animal welfare agencies, and thousands of PetSmart associates and PetSmart customers, PetSmart Charities helps save the life of a homeless pet every two minutes.

"Each year, three to four million shelter pets are euthanized simply because they do not have a loving home," said Susana Della Maddalena, PetSmart Charities Vice President and Executive Director. "It has taken us 13 years to adopt out the same number of pets. We are excited to celebrate this milestone. It's a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the adopter and the millions of people who have already joined our adoption family. In addition, the lucky animal welfare agency that helps adopt the three-millionth pet will be recognized with a $3,000 award from PetSmart Charities."

If you're the animal lover who helps PetSmart Charities cross that milestone, not only will you gain a loving companion for years to come, but you'll also receive a heap of prizes to help mark this special occasion. The new pet parent can look forward to food for life for his or her pooch or kitty, pet training and grooming services for life, plus a shopping cart loaded with pet beds, toys, bowls, collars and more, all provided by PetSmart. In addition, Banfield, The Pet Hospital®, will be providing an Optimum Wellness Plan for one year. The happy new companions will also be featured in a national publicity campaign by the nonprofit organization to promote the importance of pet adoption.

The Bradfords of Lexington, Ky. became the one-millionth adoptive family when they took home a Labrador-mix named Elsie in January 2001. Three-and-a-half years later, the Armstrongs of O'Fallon, Ill. rescued a sweet three-year-old beagle-mix named Louie, making them the two-millionth PetSmart Charities adopters. The three-millionth adopter could be you! PetSmart Charities is only 28,000 pet adoptions away from its three-millionth goal today. In 1987, PetSmart founders made the decision not to sell dogs and cats, rather, to promote adoption of those pets already in need of loving homes. Established by PetSmart in 1994, PetSmart Charities partners with more than 3,000 animal welfare agencies and thousands of PetSmart associates in 900 PetSmart stores across the U.S. and Canada to facilitate pet adoptions.
