PetSmart Charities® Sends Emergency Relief Waggin'® Vehicle to Animal Neglect Situation in Ohio

Officials Report Nearly 400 Dogs and Cats in Need of Immediate Medical Care

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - February 23, 2011) - PetSmart Charities has dispatched its Emergency Relief Waggin'® vehicle to the scene of an animal neglect situation in Clark County, Ohio, where 361 dogs and 15 cats are in need of assistance. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is the lead agency in this rescue.

On Thursday, February 17, the Clark County Combined Health District and the Clark County Humane Society served an administrative and criminal search warrant to the One More Chance Rescue Center. The Humane Society is still investigating the property and animals involved. The Clark County Board of Health declared the site a public health nuisance with 28 days to abate the solid waste.

"Many of the dogs are old and not well socialized because they have been kept in horrible, filthy conditions," said Kyle Held, commander of a special unit of the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that responds nationwide to large-scale animal rescues. "They were housed in old livestock barns with no ventilation and little light."

PetSmart Charities' Emergency Relief Waggin' vehicle is stocked with $60,000 worth of crucial supplies, including pet food, wire crates, plastic carriers, bowls and leashes. The vehicle is also stocked with items such as fans, a generator, tents, a battery charger and lights to aid the animal rescuers on scene. The 53-foot trailer and its 16-ton cargo load departed the PetSmart® Distribution Center in Ottawa, IL., bound for the scene, where animal-rescue teams will operate an emergency animal shelter.

"PetSmart Charities dispatches a specially trained team of volunteers to meet the Emergency Relief Waggin' vehicle. The volunteers unload critical supplies and set up temporary shelters to assist the animal victims," said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc. "This enables rescuers to focus on the animals and immediately tend to their needs. This well-executed, cooperative effort means that the helpless animal victims will get the assistance they need as quickly and efficiently as possible."

PetSmart Charities is a nonprofit organization and the largest funder of companion animal-welfare efforts in North America. It established its Emergency Relief Waggin' program in 2007 to help animals such as these, who are displaced and/or suffering as a result of natural or man-made disasters.
