Pharma Industry Shifts Requirements for Patient Adherence Vendors

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC--(Marketwired - December 20, 2016) - A new study of two dozen companies found that half of surveyed pharmaceutical firms continue to rely heavily on patient adherence vendors' experience level and reputation when outsourcing any part of their initiatives. Furthermore, 50% of healthcare companies also took into account how well vendors demonstrated an understanding of their specific patient types when selecting outsourced partners.

But other aspects of patient adherence vendors' strategic approaches have crept into the pharmaceutical industry's due diligence when selecting an outsourced partner. According to the study, Patient Adherence Program Planning: Drive Compliance to Improve Treatment Outcomes, 38% of surveyed pharma firms find the following three qualifications the most important when selecting suitable patient adherence vendors:

  • Innovation/creativity
  • Therapeutic area of knowledge
  • Initiative strategy

The study also found that 25% of surveyed healthcare firms reported that they examine vendors' complete solutions. However, the aspects of patient compliance, cost efficiency, measurable outcomes, and technology were only used to select vendors by 13% of surveyed firms.

"For many companies, outsourcing is a key resource for developing and implementing patient adherence initiatives," said Adam Bianchi, senior director of research at Cutting Edge Information. "Not all firms have the full resources necessary to create and launch these objectives in-house, especially since teams have a wide range of channels to reach consumers."

Experienced patient adherence vendors can either create unique strategies or develop and design innovative patient-focused solutions. However, some drug companies may maintain patient focused strategies, but not possess the resources to manage ongoing projects or application upkeep. Therefore, these pharmaceutical companies would select vendors from a preferred list based on their capabilities and cost-effectiveness.
