Phenolic Products Cleaning Up the Market With Strong Growth, According to BCC Research

WELLESLEY, MA--(Marketwired - November 24, 2015) - The global market value for antiseptics and disinfectants should receive a boost from the phenolic products segment, which should demonstrate healthy growth over the next five years. BCC Research reveals in its new report that despite some regulatory concerns about triclosan (a phenolic compound), the market for antiseptics and disinfectants, phenol and derivatives-based antiseptics and disinfectants should add $600 million in revenues over the forecast period.

The global market for antiseptics and disinfectants offers great opportunities across all regions. The need of the products in hospital settings, homes, food-processing units and many other areas, along with their awareness and usage, is generating more demand, especially in developing nations. Emerging markets are also showing great promise with the adoption of a more controlled environment in areas where high contamination may be expected, along with adopting better hygienic habits.

The worldwide market for antiseptics and disinfectants is anticipated to reach $5.6 billion and $7.9 billion in 2015 and 2020, respectively, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%. As a region segment, Europe should exhibit the highest five-year CAGR at 7.4% and reach almost $2.4 billion in 2020. North America, the largest segment by region, should total $2.1 billion and $3 billion in 2015 and 2020, respectively.

Distribution agreements in the emerging markets, acquisitions, approvals and product launches will remain key market drivers. The forecast period should see more activities with an expected favorable exchange rate and improving global economy.

Phenol and its derivatives have dominated the market. In 2013, this segment generated nearly $1.3 billion, and should grow to nearly $1.4 billion by the end of 2015, representing a market share of 24.9%.

In April 2015, the FDA issued a proposed rule requiring additional safety data for certain active ingredients in health care antiseptics. The move is expected to affect various antiseptic products containing triclosan, a phenolic compound. Despite this concern, the market will be moderately steady with other phenolic products.

"Evaluation of antiseptics for health safety by regulatory agencies and the exchange rate fluctuations might be factors in the growth of the overall antiseptics and disinfectants market, including phenolics. However, the phenol-based products and solutions market is stable, and should grow moderately in the forecast period with various strong brands in all the regional markets," says BCC Research analyst Shalini S. Dewan. "The growth in Europe has been hampered mostly due to poor currency rates since 2012. However, the European market is anticipated to do well in the forecast period with the presence of companies such as Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC and its strong products such as Dettol and Lysol."

Antiseptics and Disinfectants (CHM052C) examines the global market by category, geography and application techniques. Geographical analysis includes North America (U.S. and Canada), Europe and emerging markets (Asian countries, South America, and parts of Africa and Russia. The report identifies market dynamics, growth drivers, inhibitors, opportunities, and forecasts trends and revenue through 2020.
