Philippines National Oil Company Deploys Nodal Market Analytics Software Solution From Global Energy Decisions to Support Energy Trading

Utilized to Model Philippines Wholesale Electricity Spot Market to Support Short-Term Trading Decisions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES and BOULDER, CO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 18, 2007 -- Philippines National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC), the largest supplier of geothermal energy in the Philippines, has adopted software from Global Energy Decisions (Global Energy) to perform nodal market modeling for short-term trading decisions for the Philippines Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

"PNOC needed a robust solution to identify at what price to bid our excess capacity into the WESM in order to optimize our generation revenue. We required a software model that supported automated inputs for bus level load forecasts, generation forecasts including plant outages, capacity and de-rates, estimated hydro generation, and transmission outages," said Ramon B. Diaz de Rivera, Manager, Steam and Power Sales Department, PNOC Energy Development Corporation. "Global Energy's software enables us to model the WESM and make key decisions for our week-ahead trading."

PNOC implemented Global Energy's nodal market analytics solution to meet their decision support needs for short-term trading decisions and WESM market modeling. The model will be extended over time to also support mid and long-term market analysis, and forecasting for energy, ancillary services, and capacity markets. Global Energy's PROSYM -- the most widely adopted chronological simulation engine in the industry -- provides PNOC detailed models with advanced commitment and interchange logic used for system studies, and both nodal and regional market modeling.

"Our nodal market analytics software is designed to meet the kind of challenges PNOC faced in preparing for the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. I am delighted that we were able to meet PNOC's need for short-term decision support in order to improve their business results," said Ron McMahan, CEO of Global Energy Decisions.

Global Energy's market analytics software solutions are the most widely adopted in the world and allow users to forecast electricity and fuel prices, value congestion rights and perform financial analysis. Simulation-ready market data, which covers all the generation, transmission, transaction, load, fuel, resource and other key attributes required to effectively model electricity markets, is available for 32 European and Asia-Pacific markets, and for five North American regions.
