Phoenix Dentist Offering New Noninvasive Technique for Gum Recession

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - February 29, 2016) -  Are your gums getting smaller and smaller? Dr. Thomas Mattern, a dentist trained in placing dental implants, has undergone training to provide a new technique to repair gum recession with virtually no post-operative discomfort.

The new training, known as The Chao Pinhole™ Surgical Technique, is a method dentists use to move the gums into a position that covers more of the tooth's crown. The technique has become a welcomed alternative to traditional gum surgery, as it does not require the use of scalpels and sutures.

"We're excited for this new technique to begin aiding patients in pain reduction and faster surgery time," Dr. Mattern said. "This can benefit any patient, from kids after completing their ortho treatments to elderly patients who are dealing with gum recession."

Dr. Mattern recently attended training in Alhambra, California, with Dr. John Chao, an internationally known dentist who developed his own pinhole surgery method. The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique puts a small pinhole in the gum tissue and gradually moves the gums into a more appropriate position. Once the gums are in place, the doctor places collagen strips to stabilize the gums.

Gum recession can be caused by gum disease, hormonal changes in the body or even hard brushing. When the gums recede, the root of the tooth becomes exposed to harmful bacteria and cavities, increasing the risk of tooth loss.

Traditional gum recession surgery uses gum grafts and then stabilizes the gums with sutures. Dr. Mattern said patients who receive the pinhole technique experience little to no post-treatment sensitivity.

"It's amazing to have a technique that simplifies a treatment that historically has been extremely invasive," Dr. Mattern said. "By increasing the comfort of the treatment, we can encourage more patients to address their gum recession problems before the issue causes irreparable damage."
