Phoenix Dentist Reveals Startling Differences Between Corporate and Concierge Dentistry

Dr. Arthur Chal Compares the Patient-Focused Philosophy of Concierge Dentistry With the Profit-Based Behavior of Corporate Dental Practices, Revealing a Worrisome Trend Toward a More Impersonal Business Model

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwired - Jun 10, 2015) - Dental practices traditionally have been privately run by a small number of dentists who can provide personal attention and exceptional care to the local population, explains Dr. Arthur Chal, a dentist in Phoenix. However, he states that corporate dental offices, which often prioritize monetary gains, have been opening across the nation in record numbers. These enterprises, he adds, typically seek to achieve the highest monetary returns possible, often to the detriment of the individual's best interest. He believes that a profit-based model of business is at odds with providing high quality, customized dental treatment, which are hallmarks of concierge dentistry.

Dr. Chal notes that corporate dentistry practices can quickly lead to a conflict of interest, particularly if a product manufacturer sponsors the chain or if someone other than a dental professional leads the business. The consequences of choosing the convenience of a flashy corporate dental office can be severe, he cautions, as the employees may suggest expensive and unnecessary dental treatment, provide low quality work or utilize inferior materials, or overlook developing health problems that a more attentive and patient-focused dentist may have identified. Despite the alarming potential for harm, he says there appears to be a paradigm shift in dental care from private practices to corporate chains.

Concierge dentistry, Dr. Chal contrasts, is designed with the individual's safety, comfort, and outcome in mind. "Concierge, in my opinion, means committed to and devoted to the patient, committed to and devoted to high quality care at a fair price for the extra time and attention that requires." In many cases, he informs, dentists employed by chain dental practices earn a bonus or a commission by reaching production quotas or upselling treatments. This often forces dentists to choose sales above excellence, profits above patients, which is unprofessional at best and negligent at worst, he notes. The Phoenix dentist maintains a list of patient reviews on his website that illustrate some of the differences between these two styles of dental care.

Ultimately, Dr. Chal believes that the move toward corporate dentistry could potentially have negative implications if the primary concern of the business is profit. He suggests that a concierge dental office may better serve patients who desire a more personalized approach that emphasizes quality care and long-lasting results.
