Photographic Equipment Makers Receive an Early Christmas Gift

The Bedford Report Provides Analyst Research on Eastman Kodak & Canon

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - December 13, 2010) -  Last Friday the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment rose to 74.2 from 71.6 at the end of November -- reaching its highest level since June, and its third highest level since early 2008. The report is a good omen for consumer confidence, as well as consumer expenditure, which has been low for the past few months due to the high rate of unemployment and slow job creation. The news also bodes well for the consumer products segment of the Photographic Equipment & Supplies industry -- and just in time for Christmas. Photographic equipment makers have been rolling out new products in order to sustain growth and remain relevant amongst the prevailing smartphone trend. However, with consumers more cautious than ever, and discretionary spending way down, digital camera sales -- which are viewed as low-priority for many consumers -- are way down. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Photographic Equipment & Supplies Industry and provides research reports on Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK) and Canon, Inc. (NYSE: CAJ). Over the last few years, smartphones such as the BlackBerry and iPhone have slowed the purchase rate of "point and shoot" cameras significantly -- particularly entry level compact cameras which have relatively the same features as smartphones. According to the market research firm NPD Group, Point and shoot camera revenues have slipped 24 percent to $1.9 billion, from $2.4 billion since 2008. While easy to blame it on the recession, sales are still falling since the recession eased.

On the upside, sales of more sophisticated cameras -- those that can do more than the average smartphone -- have improved drastically this year. NDP Group says that sales of more powerful cameras like S.L.R.s have increased by nearly 29 percent in dollars since 2009.
