Picket lines today at TRU

KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 16, 2012) - Some of the more than 650 CUPE support workers at Thompson Rivers University will be walking off the job at 10:30 this morning to take part in strike action. Their picket line will be followed by a noon-hour rally on campus.

CUPE Local 4879 president Lois Rugg says her members are frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations. The collective agreement at TRU and other universities in BC expired in 2010.

"Despite meeting with the employer more than 10 times over the past two-and-half years, we really haven't gotten very far," says Rugg. She adds that, "Now that the university has its savings plan in place and there has been a tentative agreement at UBC, there really isn't any good reason why we can't reach a deal here."

Following job action on Oct. 4 and an overtime ban instituted last week, the university has agreed to return to the bargaining table on Thursday and Friday.
