Ping Chooses Databarracks to Keep Them in the Bunker

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 23, 2009) - This year Ping is 50 years old and a lot has happened since Karsten Solheim's frustration with his putter lead him to design his own out of his garage all those years ago. Little could Karsten have imagined that 50 years later Ping would be one of the most recognised global sports brands, respected for the passion they have for the sport and the customers they serve. Ping is a golf icon, highly regarded for the engineering innovations they have brought to the industry.

In 2009, with many locations all over the world and over 1,000 employees, the passion for golf and the products that Ping produce haven't changed, but the way in which the company delivers them certainly has. While Karsten's youngest son (C.E.O.) and his eldest grandson (also a John) ensure that the company's passion and focus remain unwavering, the company's technology focus is global delivery, 3d modelling and supercomputing; a long cry from Karsten Solheim's Garage.

It was by embracing only the best technology that Ping Europe chose Databarracks to help protect their information systems. "As an IT team, we support approximately 100 staff members here in Europe and we pride ourselves on giving those users a very high quality of service." said Neil Cottingham, IT Manager at Ping Europe. "We have a UNIX E.R.P. system (Enterprise Resource Planning) and various other email and application servers; which we backed up to tape. The UNIX system meant that we were stuck with a legacy backup solution which was causing us some pain and I wasn't 100% confident that my tapes would restore; and certainly not within the time frame the business requires."

"Databarracks was chosen after searching for the best online backup solution and a proof-of-concept, which included a test restore of our ERP system, I now feel confident that the business can continue with as little impact as possible if we had a disaster and the fact that the service is fully managed means that neither myself nor my team have to spend any more time on backups or log checking", said Neil.

Databarracks uses a combination of Asigra software with Netapp hardware and the Bunker, a tier 4 data centre in Kent, to deliver a fully managed backup service to thousands of enterprise customers based in the UK and across the world.

Peter Groucutt, managing director at Databarracks, comments: "We are really happy that Ping has chosen us to manage the backup of their European operations. To be able to partner with such a globally recognisable brand that has leveraged product performance and quality throughout the golf industry is gratifying. Databarracks share Ping's passion for innovation and technology....not to mention golf."
